Visiting the Pont du Gard from Orange

Located just 40 minutes from our hotel in Orange, the Pont du Gard is one of the must-see monuments in the south of France.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, this impressive Roman aqueduct has towered over the Gardon River for nearly 2,000 years.

It makes for a wonderful excursion during your stay in Provence, combining historical discovery, an outdoor walk, and Mediterranean scenery.

How to visit the Pont du Gard from Orange?

The Pont du Gard is located approximately 45 km or a 40-minute drive from Orange. The easiest route is via the A9 motorway, taking exit 23 at Remoulins.

There are two access points:
  • The left bank: ideal for reaching the museum, cultural areas, shops, and dining facilities.
  • The right bank: best for walks, picnics, and beautiful panoramic views of the bridge.

Access to the monument and the riverbanks is free for pedestrians and cyclists. Parking incurs a fee, with a flat rate of around €9 per vehicle.

Admission to the discovery areas starts at €8 per adult, and guided tours start at €15. Be sure to check rates and opening times before your visit.

The Pont du Gard: a masterpiece of Roman architecture

Standing 49 meters tall with three tiers of arches, the Pont du Gard is the highest Roman aqueduct bridge in the world.

Built in the 1st century, it was part of an aqueduct system spanning nearly 50 kilometers, designed to transport water to Nîmes.

Today, the monument can be admired from the banks of the Gardon River, as well as by walking across its lowest tier, which is open to pedestrians.

Take the time to admire its monumental arches and enjoy the various viewpoints overlooking the river.

What to do during your visit to the Pont du Gard?

The site offers much more than just its famous aqueduct!

You can extend your visit with a range of activities:
  • Visit the interactive museum to learn about the bridge's construction and the genius of Roman engineering.
  • Watch the film dedicated to the monument's history.

  • Stroll along the Gardon River and enjoy the natural surroundings for a picnic break.
  • Join a guided tour for access to the aqueduct's third tier (subject to availability and scheduled times).
